About Your Tutor

Lisa Sisk

With over 17 years experience as owner of This is Knit and even more as a knitter herself, Lisa Sisk has a wealth of knowledge that she is going to share with you.

If you already follow us on Instagram, then you are familiar with the series “Things I Wish I’d Known Before I Started Knitting” where you can have a taste of Lisa’s detailed and clear instructions.

This is Knit

Plus… you’ll also have the whole of the This is Knit team to call on. (Don’t make us add up how many years experience we have – it will only make us feel old!)

The full team will be on hand to answer any course questions you have through chat windows and over email.

Diving into a first big project, like a sweater, can feel a bit scary. There will be new techniques and unfamiliar abbreviations, and you might feel a bit lost without your own real life knitter to bounce ideas.

But don’t worry - you’ve got *us*!

We’ll have your back (and front, and sleeves!) every step of the way, from choosing your yarn and size, right through until you are proudly wearing your finished sweater.

We’ve broken down the process of knitting a sweater into several stages, and for each one we have put together video tutorials that you can watch in your own time and at your own pace.

Every technique is covered and you’ll even find a few bonus tutorials to give you options as you work your way through the design.

Follow Along FAQs

Yes, absolutely! Simply purchase a course pass here.

You will then receive a follow up email with enrolment instructions for your gift recipient.

This is for all knitters that want to push themselves into knitting their first sweater. If you are an adventurous beginner that wants to make your first sweater, or an advanced knitter that has never knitted one before, then this is for you.

Please bear in mind that there are many techniques involved in the shaping and making of a sweater. The pattern chosen is knit in the round, in one piece, from the top down.

If you are a beginner that has never knitted in the round, then you might want to start off making a simple cowl, to get comfortable with the concept of knitting in the round.

But if you feel adventurous enough, and are patient and willing to take your time as you learn new techniques, then hop on! Will do everything we can to support you along the way.

You should be comfortable with casting on, knit, purl and casting off.

You will also need a basic knowledge of knitting in the round.

Knowledge of simple increases and decreases is also a plus!

The pattern will be supplied digitally via Ravelry.com after you have purchased your follow along ticket.

You should receive an email with the link to the pattern within one working day of purchasing your follow along ticket.

Please allow a little extra time for this email to come through if you sign up on a weekend.

Your ticket purchase covers the pattern fee of approx €10, all tutorials and remote support for €25 (a bargain!) and a €30 coupon code towards your follow along materials.

You will receive a unique coupon code for use in our online shop after you purchase you follow along ticket.

This code will be valid for 6 months, and it must be used in one single transaction.

We will email you links to each lesson on a set schedule, but you can follow along at your own pace.

The pattern calls for aran or worsted weight yarn. One of the first lessons will go through how to choose the right yarn for your project and how to make sure you have enough for your chosen size too, of course. You can view our recommended yarns for this design here.

Generally speaking you can reuse the yarn from your swatches in your project (even though the yarn has already been blocked). It shouldn't make a very noticeable difference in your finished project, especially after you block the whole sweater again at the end.

If you'd prefer to have some "insurance" yarn then ordering an extra ball might be no harm at all. Aran / worsted weight yarn is very versatile and you could even use any leftovers as stripes in your next sweater project. (Remember there are multiple different combinations and styles that can be made from this one pattern, so you won't be short of options!)

This will depend!

The pattern recommends 5mm / US 8 for the main fabric and 4.5mn / US 7 for the ribbed edges, but your swatch might tell you that you need to adjust in order to get the right fit on your finished sweater.

We cover this in one of the first lessons of the follow along too. All will be explained, we promise!

Simply pop your query in the chat box at the bottom right hand corner of the screen.

A member of the TIK Team will get back to you within one working day.

Now it all makes sense!

I think of myself as quite an advanced knitter but I've never been able to navigate and understand top down patterns - they were like a different language and then along came Lisa and her top down jumper tutorial. German Short Rows - now a doddle! ☺️
This is a very well prepared and presented tutorial, easy to follow, full of tips and suggestions and I've now made 2 successful top down jumpers. Thank you! Love knitting this way and it's great not having to sew up.
I'm going to do the colourway one next.

Easy knitting

I'm a new knitter and bought the sweater and sock video tutorials. I have enjoyed using them at my own pace and they are so easy to understand. Will buy the color change video next without a doubt.

First Sweater Follow Along

Always wanted to knit a sweater but never got the confidence until I saw this. I’m just working on the yoke. So far the instructions have been so clear and helpful every step of the way. I’m so excited to finish my first sweater!!!

I finished my first sweater!

I can't believe it. Thanks so much to This is Knit and the support I received. I received help on choosing a size, and felt confident tackling new techniques, like German Short rows!

While the videos were so helpful and confidence building, I had to find videos on Left Handed Knitting to be able to knit this sweater. I found a YouTube channel: Yarn Craft for Lefties, which was game changing. After trying many times to knit right-handed (contrary to common belief, right-handed Continental is not left handed knitting), I finally learned to knit left-handed, mirror. With that and the excellent support from the This is Knit team, I not only shocked myself, but I have created a sweater I never want to take off. Not to mention taking up a new hobby that has SO many benefits - in addition to the finished products.

I used Malbrigo Rios in color 69 Pearl 10.

Thank you so much for the inspiration.

P.S. For any new teaching videos, it would be so helpful to us left-handed mirror knitters if you referred to needles other than right and left. Maybe working needle? Front needle? Knit-from needle; Knit-to needle? Sometimes the translation was mind bending!!
