French mill Fonty have taken the finest merino fleece and cosied it right up with delicate yak down, to create a plump worsted weight yarn that is particularly warm and soft.
The merino fibres absorb the full depth of each dye bath, whereas the natural yak down (of grey, brown or dark brown) resists the take up of colour. The result is a heathered yarn with intriguing depth and shift of tones.
The yak down originates exclusively from the "Khangai Mountains Breeders Cooperative", an eco-responsible and fair trade local organisation set up by Fonty in Mongolia with the technical support of AVSF (Agronomists and Veterinarians Without Borders). The yaks are combed in the spring by Mongolian herders, and after sorting, a little less than 100g of down per animal and per year are harvested and transformed into yarn by Fonty.
It is recommended to wash MONGOLIA 5 by hand, if possible with organic natural soap, without spinning, and to dry it flat. Like all yak fibres, this yarn will soften further with successive washes.
