Blessing The Boats

Ériu Traditions Aran Yarn – 100% Irish Romney Wool

Rooted in Irish heritage, Ériu Traditions Aran Yarn is a beautiful Aran-weight yarn made from 100% Irish Romney wool. Sourced through Ériu’s Farm to Yarn network, this yarn combines excellent stitch definition with a lovely softness, making it particularly well suited to traditional Aran sweaters, intricate cables and textured knitting.

Ériu works in partnership with The Emerald Romney Co-op, a dedicated group of Irish farmers committed to preserving the Romney breed and restoring the value of premium Irish-grown wool. Each fleece is carefully selected and hand-sorted by expert shearers Dave and Roy, supporting Ériu’s mission to champion Irish wool and ensure fair pay for the farmers behind it.

About Ériu Traditions Aran

With its defined stitches and comfortable feel, this yarn is a wonderful choice for projects where texture takes centre stage. The Romney wool provides the structure needed to show off traditional cable patterns while remaining soft against the skin.

Choose Your Ériu Traditions Palette

The collection features two distinctive colour palettes inspired by Ireland’s landscapes, traditions and communities. Each shade has its own story, connecting your knitting to the heritage behind the yarn.

Turning the Turf – 7 Shades

Inspired by the traditional Irish practice of cutting and drying turf, this earthy palette follows the journey from rich, dark peat to the sunlit landscape and the warmth of the cottage hearth.

The seven shades are Turf (deep brown-black), Dig (grey-brown), Turning (light grey-brown), Unity (natural undyed), Rust (rust and terracotta), Land (dark green) and Sundrench (ochre yellow).

The palette also celebrates meitheal, the Irish tradition of communities coming together to work for the common good. Its guiding phrase, “Ní neart go cur le chéile”, means “There is no strength without unity” and reflects the collaborative spirit behind Ériu’s Farm to Yarn network.

Out to Sea – 10 Shades

Inspired by Ireland’s fishing communities and maritime heritage, particularly along the west coast and around the Aran Islands, Out to Sea draws on the colours of fishing boats, coastal harbours, Atlantic wildlife and the folklore of life at sea.

The ten shades are Blessing the Boats (white), Currach (black), Cold Iron (grey), Clan (navy blue), Star of the Sea (bright blue), Merrow (turquoise), Oilskin (yellow), Puffin (neon orange), Emerald Isle (bright green) and Don't Say Red (bright red).

From the traditional currach boats to the superstitions surrounding fishermen setting out to sea, each shade reflects a different part of Ireland’s coastal culture. The palette offers a vibrant option for traditional Aran designs and colourful contemporary knits alike.

Perfect for Aran Knitting

Ériu Traditions Aran Yarn is a lovely choice for cable-knit sweaters, cardigans, textured accessories and other projects that benefit from clear stitch definition. With two story-rich palettes to choose from, you can create pieces that celebrate both the beauty of Irish wool and the traditions that inspired its colours.

Farm to Yarn – Supporting Irish Wool

Through its Farm to Yarn network and partnership with The Emerald Romney Co-op, Ériu works to support Irish farmers, preserve the Romney breed and champion the quality of locally grown wool. Choosing this yarn means working with a fibre that has a direct connection to the land, the farmers and the heritage of Ireland.
