Seven Super Bulky Knit Ideas For This Season - This is Knit
Seven Super Bulky Knit Ideas For This Season - This is Knit

Projects in super bulky yarn knit up super fast, so if you're looking for an instant gratification project or a last minute gift idea, this is the list for you. In this post, we're rounding up some trendy patterns you can cast on and cast off in what will seem like no time at all. Knit a hat in a night - or two if you are really ambitious! Super bulky yarn, also known as super chunky, is your go-to wool when you need a project done yesterday!

And with prime gift giving season around the corner, what better way to show off your knitting skills than to craft something for someone special. We may not be able to hug everyone we love right now but this is basically the next best thing (in my knitter opinion)! Keep on reading to find out which patterns we've hand picked as project inspiration for you this season.

Reef Beanie by Lizzy Knits

This stunning beanie designed by Lizzy Knits would be absolutely ideal if you are looking for a quick last minute gift idea... Or just want to knit yourself a cozy hat! Read a recent blog post where Sarah talks about the pattern and yarn she used in depth. The sample from Lizzy Knits pictured above is knit in Malabrigo Rasta which really features the beautiful colour palette that Malabrigo is so famous for.

Top it off with one of our luxury pom poms for ultimate winter vibes and everyone will be asking you where you got that hat! I'm off to cast one on for myself later this evening...

Calzetta by Justyna Lorkowska

On the topic of super chunky, super cozy hats, Calzetta designed by Justyna Lorkowska is a timeless classic you cannot go wrong with. Not only is this free pattern incredibly easy - perfect for beginners or a knitter looking for a simple, mindless project to cast on - but it also gets topped with a pom pom (you don't have to include a pom pom of course, but I do think pom poms are so cute)! Take a gander at our Rico Design Pom Poms or our Luxury Pom Poms, or if you are feeling ambitious, use up your leftover yarn to make a matching or coordinating pom pom yourself with a Clover Pom Pom Maker!

Lightning Fast Mittens by Hill Vintage and Knits

Keep your hands roasty toasty warm this winter with these super bulky mittens designed by Vintage Hill and Knits. Malabrigo Rasta is used in the sample pictured above by OrangeShooze via Ravelry, but Millenium by Rosarios 4 would be a great solid colour alternative! This pattern would be an excellent choice for the knitter looking to expand their skillset with double pointed needles or the magic loop method.

Pretty Brioche Thing by Justyna Lorkowska

Brioche is all the rage in the knitting world lately and it's easy to see why. It's addictive, shows off hand dyed yarn super well, and produces the squishiest, cuddliest fabric imaginable. So if you're either a brioche convert already or looking to dip your toes in the brioche knitting world, look no further than Justyna Lorkowska's Pretty Brioche Thing

Choose two contrasting or complementary colourways of Malabrigo Rasta (Apple Green and Fiesta would be particularly Christmas-y!) or go for a contrast with the solid tones of Millenium. Did I also mention that this brioche cowl pattern is free? #winning!

 Strathcona Sweater by Tara-Lynn Morrison

Tara-Lynn Morrison of Good Night, Day has been designing some stunning knitwear in super chunky yarns and we are 100% here for it. Check out this super chunky, super cozy pullover called Strathcona. You can easily cast on this jumper on a Friday evening and have it finished by Sunday. Talk about instant(ish) gratification!

Take a closer look at the Strathcona Sweater in a recent blog post where Sarah talks about her experience knitting this design and in one of our super chunky yarns, Millenium by Rosarios 4. Strathcona would be particularly good for a knitter who has a hankering to cast on a jumper... and because it's knit with super chunky yarn, you won't have to wait too long to try it on! We think Rosarios 4's Millenium is perfect for this design (and other patterns from Good Night, Day!).

Entwine Scarf by Jane Richmond

I adore this massively chunky scarf design. Look at that fringe! The Entwine Scarf designed by Canadian-based knitwear designer Jane Richmond is part of a collaborative knitwear pattern book with designer Shannon Cook called Within: Knitting Patterns to Warm the Soul. Can't you just imagine this ultra plush scarf wrapped around you while you run to the shops or go on a brisk morning walk?

Iced by Carol Feller

This list wouldn't be complete without Carol Feller's ever popular Iced Cardigan. A loose and casual buttoned cardigan designed in super chunky yarn, Iced would be ideal for wrapping up in by a fire on a chilly evening, some more knitting in front of you, and a hot drink next to you. What colour is calling out your name? And if you need some buttons to go with it, check out our button range!
